A Fareej Reimagined through Topography, Ecology, and Culture

 

Beneath the hard crust of contemporary suburban sprawl, a forgotten logic sleeps—the fareej: a clustered living structure of shaded paths, porous thresholds, shared courtyards, and climate wisdom written in built form. Baraha reawakens this collective intelligence by reimagining ground, air, and water as architectural protagonists.

 

This proposal begins where many designs end: with the land. We carve valleys perpendicular to roads, allowing stormwater to flow, settle, and nourish. These carved lines form not just drainage—but green arteries, social passages, ecological memory. Homes are lifted above these corridors, allowing wind to pass, shade to form, and the land to breathe again.

 

Between the buildings, sikkas thread like veins, connecting neighbors. At their intersections, barahas emerge—tiny urban lungs where people meet, rest, and belong. Each home gives a piece of itself to the public realm, stitching privacy and community into one spatial fabric.

 

Drawing from the topographic, cultural, and climatic DNA of the region, Baraha proposes not nostalgia, but continuity—of wisdom, of water, of wind, of people. In a time of ecological urgency and social fragmentation, we return to the ground not to repeat the past, but to re-learn how to dwell.

The house is organized around a split circulation: a public guest axis aligned with the sikka, and a private loop for residents. The majlis and office directly connect to the public realm, reinforcing hospitality and openness. Living areas face the interior courtyard, while bedrooms sit above for privacy and climate comfort. Spatial layering ensures thermal zoning and social filtering, with outdoor thresholds mediating between domains. The structure anticipates future growth through defined extension zones, while the house’s partial setback generates communal baraha spaces, restoring traditional reciprocity between the private plot and the shared street.

 

Around the baraha, functions are carefully choreographed to balance openness, climate, and tradition. The majlis and the office faces the sikka and receives soft light through openings, while staying connected to the community space. Deep seating steps of the majlis are carved into the ground, inviting informal gathering and passive cooling. The courtyard’s porous paving and native planting bring nature inward, enabling breeze to pass through and light to scatter.

 

Both the sikka wall and the courtyard façade integrate a reinterpretation of traditional ventilation sections—allowing air circulation while deflecting rain. These passive elements create microclimates of comfort. The house steps back to gift space to the baraha, reinforcing a spatial culture where private plots contribute to the shared life of the neighborhood.

The house balances openness and privacy through a layered spatial arrangement. The living room, with its separate entrance, opens onto a private courtyard (hawsh)—a shaded inner realm designed for social rituals and thermal relief. Within the hawsh, a traditional falaj system gently circulates water through a shallow pool, creating evaporative cooling and acoustic serenity. This falaj extends beyond the plot, flowing across multiple homes, stitching together a network of communal comfort and ecological continuity.

 

The entire home benefits from two enhanced barjeels—wind towers reimagined as passive climate engines. Warm air is drawn from above through windcatchers, then filtered and channeled into a cool central shaft. This shaft, thermally regulated with chilled water, cools the air before releasing it at lower levels across the rooms. The water used for cooling collects in a pool at the base, where it is recirculated by pump to the top. This low-energy loop allows nearly every space in the house to be naturally ventilated and climatically stabilized.
