Ali Erkan House

The Ali Erkan House, located in the historic Süleymaniye Neighborhood of Gümüşhane, was restored in 2017 following the preparation of survey, restitution, and restoration projects by KOOP Architects in 2013. The project was carried out to preserve the original function and characteristics of the building while adapting it to contemporary needs. Apart from minor interventions addressing the expanding family structure and modern wet space requirements, the building was preserved in its entirety with its original identity.

During the restoration process, damaged wooden elements were renewed using original materials and details, and previously closed fireplaces, staircases, and other original voids were reopened. Additionally, the roof and flooring materials were renewed with materials compatible with the region’s historical fabric. The interventions made to the ground and first floors helped preserve the historical essence of the building while making it suitable for modern living standards.

Non-functional structures and unsuitable additions surrounding the building were removed, and a drainage system was implemented to address moisture issues. Furthermore, contemporary additions were made to the attic to enhance the building’s functionality and expand its usable space. The architectural character of the building was preserved while integrating modern enhancements to meet the family’s needs.
